Composing Solo EXTERNAL CORE

Brief:
Your school is hosting a showcase for parents and governors. You have been asked to compose a 15 minute soundtrack appropriate to the opening of the event.

Your work: Must be suitable for the audience

TASK 1 Planning

My statement of personal aims:
Through this assignment my aim is to in the end have an understanding of creating music to a much higher level and to see how other artists create their pieces. I also want to work on my confidence (people hearing my music) and my overall completion. Overall completion I mean putting chords with my lyrics because I have limited knowledge of chords so that's another thing I hope to learn.

Through my contribution to the event I would like to achieve the following goals:The things I want to achieve in this unit are to:

Understand my music more- to see where I get my inspirations from and the main things  I write about. EG: romance/pop. These are the two things that mainly come up in my work and I need to have an understanding of how to fit them together successfully. I also want to be able to fit chords into my songs successfully to create good piano backings for my vocal lines that the audience will like.

I think that I have the following skills which I will use to help me achieve these goals……I know how to write vocal solo songs already so my main skills are in writing lyrics. I will be asking Mr Gower to help me with my chord setting and understanding of what chords can be used with melodies that I create. Also I'm good with people and judging their emotions so I can see what they think of my stuff just by their look, therefore, I will be able to trial my songs on different audiences and work out what they think, I will ask for opinions too and then work to improve the songs.

I will know if I’ve achieved it because…… I will be able to compose a song with chords and will have a true understanding of where I get my inspiration from so in the future if  I get stuck I can just go back to where i get my inspiration from. Also my finished set will be the required 15minutes and done by the deadline up to a standard I'm happy with and I will feel capable. The audience will also say that they like my music if I have made it correctly.

I will meet the audience expectation by.....

Showing parents and governors what I have been creating during the course as this is the music they would expect to hear at a showcase event. My music is appropriate anyway as it has no swearing and is in a popular style, liked by many people.

I will not be surveying what the audience like in advance because I think they should hear something their not expecting nor know about because if I did ask I would just get all the same boring, borderline answers so by not asking I will be creating a sense of mystery about what my compositions will be like. Also the audience will be able to experience hearing my way of writing and presenting songs because there is no set way to write a song.
I will make sure that the length of my song is 15 minutes no shorter because that is what is expected of me.

Plan of my contribution to the performance:

The requirements of the brief and how I will meet them:
I am being asked to create 15 minutes worth of music for parents and governors. I will make my music pleasant to the ear and appropriate for the event. I will make sure my set is 15 minutes long and no shorter.  I will also be making sure I understand what I'm learning e.g. chords because that's the main point of this course, to learn new things about writing music to a high level. I also have to be aware of health and safety issues (eg. loose wires on the floor)

What I intend to do:
My compositions will be recorded live as they are vocal and piano pieces. The performances of the compositions will be played as recordings to the audience. I would be too nervous to perform the compositions live and this way they will fit in with the other compositions by the other students in the class as they are all prerecorded. I will probably play 'rain' first because it's quite an upbeat song which will make it a good opener. My second will probably be 'trust is a must' reason because my songs are sort of like a story and it makes sense to put them in this order. It's not that light hearted but it's not that much of a downer that it's depressing but it could all change when it comes to recording my songs. My aim is to create romance/pop style music, this will appeal to the audience because it's not heavy music like rock, it's soft, gentle and calming but also has an upbeat twist to it which makes it catchy and easy to sing along to.

How I will do it:
I will work with my music teacher because he is the one that plays my chosen chords in the style I decide on the piano because I can't sing and play at the same time. I will be working on my lyrics in my own time or at anytime I get inspiration. I will do run through's with my music teacher in my lessons to make sure everything goes well and if I do come into a snag then I will have enough time to sort it and I will have advice from my teacher if I need it. I will listen to recordings to check I'm in time with my piano accompaniment and that everything sounds as good as possible.

Who I will need to involve:
will have to get someone to play piano for me as I can't sing and play, probably my music teacher because we work well together and I know I can get the best results with him. Also my class teacher and friend Tino to see what they think of my songs because I will need feedback to improve on my work. I will need a sound team to play the music on the day to the audience as they can operate the PA system.

Resources:
I will need a computer/ipad to play my recording to the parents and governors. Also speakers to play the music allowed (PA system). A piano to start with otherwise I won't have anything for my backing (on the recording). I will also need my lyrics written down so I can sing from them and as a back up (if they get deleted of the computer)
Also I will have to plan out my timings so I'm not rushing nor I miss the deadline and space wise I will have 40 minutes worth of private room time to check everything is ready on the day and 1 hour a week in my class lessons plus preparation time in my composition lessons.

Time needed for each song/ activity:

I am planning on having 3 minutes for each song which means I only need 5 songs altogether but I could also have three 4 minute songs and one 3 minute song which seams more manageable.  I will make sure that I am at all of my composition lessons so that I get as many ideas as possible for my compositions and will spend time making sure that my melodies are catchy by playing them to other people in between composing sessions.

Health and safety:
I will have to make sure the noise level is appropriate with a sound check before the event as if the levels are too high it could damage the audiences hearing. I will also make sure wires are tucked away or people are aware of the wires. Make sure equipment is put away safely so we don't have things lying around and in the way. Also I may have to put bright tap on the edge of corners that may be not seen by the eye in the darkness of the stage.

My set list:
1) Memories
2) Trust is a must
3) Rain
4) Insanity
I've put my songs in that order because when I wrote them thats the order I wanted them in due to the lyrics and the themes of the songs. My order has an up and down feel, it goes from upbeat to down then upbeat then down again. I wanted a mixture in my songs because there is nothing worse then having a full set of sad songs in row. By adding in up beat songs it makes the listener actually listen to the importance of the lyrics and have a sort of connection to the songs which is the main reason in writing songs, if you have a connection to the song it means more and has an importance to the individual.

Total length of compositions:
15 minutes minimum, this is the amount I will aim for because that is the time needed for the brief.

My composition are 15:32 approximately.

Composition Writing Schedule

Own preparation time (I will be working on my music with my instrumental teacher in weekly 30 minute sessions totalling 2.5 hours)

Composition Session 1: 23rd March (Controlled Assessment Time)

Today I started my new assessment as I wasn't prepared enough for the first one. I started my third songs lyrics and tune. I got a beat and recorded the beat with the lyrics and it come to 1minute 32 seconds. Over the holidays I will be arranging that recording and completing my lyrics.

Composition Session 2: 30
th March (Controlled Assessment Time)

Today I worked on my third songs lyrics which isn't really going well because I don't know what to write. I have some sort of block which I can't get over. I will go through other possible chords and different ways to play them with my composition tutor.

EASTER HOLIDAYS (Own preparation time - 7.5 hours)

Composition Session 3: 20th April (Controlled Assessment Time)

Today I got lyrics done on my song. I already had 1minute 37 seconds and without timing it I think I have another 1minute 30 seconds. Next week I have to get 4 more lines for my songs and that song is done.

Composition Session 4: 27th April (ARD - COMPLETE 2 HOURs OF TIME IN MUSIC) Controlled Assessment Time

I finished my song 'memories' and typed up that song, trust is a must and rain that need to finish.

Composition Session 5: 3rd May (Controlled Assessment Time)
Today song completed and recorded which has been sent and received my my teacher. The song is 4minutes 9 seconds long which means if my other songs are short then it's ok because I have a minute extra. I also started to record the start of 'trust is a must' and got the start recorded. I am on top of things when it comes to organisation and recording.

Composition Session 6: 4th May (Controlled Assessment Time)

Today I did my second recording and I think it went well. I managed to finish my song and record it which is record time. Both songs come to over eight minutes which is really good for my other songs, if the others fall short.
I got my third song completed which is over 3 minutes long which is working well with my plan of songs and timing. Next week I plan on recording my fourth song which I'm hoping is 4 minutes and over.

Composition Session 7: 8th May (Controlled Assessment Time)
Today I got my final song finished and recorded which means I'm all done with my music unit. I got over 15 minutes which means I've achieved the brief. I have constantly been getting my friend Tino to listen to my music so that I have thought about it and improved it as it has gone along.

Composition Session 8: 9th May (Controlled Assessment Time) 2 Hours

Today I gathered all my lyrics and chords together to put on my blog to go with the performances of my compositions

But you don’t know how I feel so it’s not all real

But when you come close I just want to say…

I just want to say,

F                               G
You light my fire… in the pouring rain
C                                          Am
You make me brighter on a cloudy day
F                                       G

You light my fire in the pouring rain

I feel like im falling down a black hole in my heart though
G#m          C#m            G#m              F#

I feel like i'm running from reality to insanity

Your life has disappeared
You're a ghost
You're soul lives on for eternity with me
Just like our memories, they will last
No matter where you are you're always in my heart
VERSE
But reality sets in
I'm afraid again
And since you've been gone---
I feel like im falling down a black hole in my soul though
I feel like i'm running from reality to insanity
I feel like i'm running from reality to insanity

You're always in my heart and my mind
I'll never forget you becuase you're the star in my mind
But that don't mean I don't miss you, every night
I lay down and cry and scream to the sky
But everyday i deal with this especially at night
But i've learnt to move on and i can see the light at the end of the tunnel...
But i still feel like i'm falling down a black hole in my heart, mind and soul though.

TASK 2 – THE FINISHED PORTFOLIO OF COMPOSITION RECORDINGS

TASK 3 Evaluation

Strengths Reflection:
My overall ability to structure a song in my own way and get it to make sense. I managed to get four songs together which was  a task for me but I managed to be determined to soldier through. I did struggle to get an accompaniment to go with my melody but I spoke about chords and learned about progressions in order to complete this.
I think my work is appropriate for the audience because its calm and because its about love its understandable and relatable in a popular style. Piano and vocals is something that os very familiar to the audience too. My compositions really show my progress as a songwriter and I am please with them.

Composition 1:
My first composition was memory. I like this song because it has serious lyrics but a quite lively,  up beat accompaniment to go with the melody. In the middle at about 1 minute 30 it slows down and becomes deep and it has a repeated sad minor chord to really get an impact on the listener. When i sing near the end of every chorus or verse i always goes up high in my vocals to add that bit of happiness and up beat tune that I'm looking for. The piano tune at points goes up beat and faster then the rest to again add the happy side of the song and to make it catchy and a song you can listen to at any point in your life.

Composition 2:
My second composition is more sad with a slower tempo and the minor chords are more important in this one. The whole song is a lot slower and its a lot more meaning for, emotion wise. At about 35seconds I asked my teacher to belt out the piano and become more dramatic to suit the importance and drama of the lyrics. At about 1minute 10 the chords change up to a more happy but still emotionally sad. The things I really like about this song are the way I've arranged it, with the chords and lyrics that suit each other even though the lyrics maybe sad but the piano is happy they just go really well. I also like when the piano goes really dramatic because I think it adds effect to the song and gives the lyrics justice.

Composition 3:
The third song is a gentle song with deep piano but also light piano parts. This song has more piano range in my opinion because it jumps from happy and light to sad and heavy. This song has more meaning to me because its about an event that happened to me. At 1minute 35 the song speeds up for a long period of time then it slowly declines back into the original beat/tune. The part I like about this song is near the end, it goes into a weird style that I cant explain but it really goes and sounds amazing to me. I am pleased with this piece as well because I worked on time signature with 2/4 and 4/4 changes and tempo changes.
Composition 4:
I think this song has lyrics that the audience can relate to and I know that parents like to talk about the weather! The piano accompaniment works well the melody for the lyrics in the vocals.

Improvement Reflection:
Composition 1 - Memories
The balance is not quite right in this one and I should have marked on dynamics to the chord chart so that the piano was quieter. It also needs a fade at the ending as it stops suddenly. However, the melody fits the chords and the structure is clear and works well.
Composition 2 - I lose my melody with the piano in the later part of this composition and the high part is out of tune because it doesn't really suit my voice so I should have either lowered this section or perhaps got another singer to perform the melody.
Composition 3 - This composition could have done with a rerecord as there were some piano mistakes and my entry at the start was a little unclear.
Composition 4 - In my fourth and final song it has a bit of an interruption in it because when I went to edit the original it deleted the parts I wanted to keep so i've had to use my trial recording which still sounds good but it just has an interruption in it. Again, it could have done with a rerecording.

In my opinion I could just improve everything because the music we listen to today is what we look up to and aim our pieces to sound like but we cant get ours to that sort of quality because them songs have been edited by professionals and the singers voices have been tampered with. I think for every song i've composed on here for my fifteen minutes the thing I could improve is just the overall quality. For instance the way i've recorded every song, my voice is very played over and drowned out by the piano especially in 'insanity' my voice is really quite and the piano is at perfect volume.
Overall I think if I was going to re do these recordings again then I would make all the songs flow into each other with no gap between them as they are all of a similar genre.
I would experiment more with the piano having more of a tune rather than just chords too.

4. Define your areas of development (e.g. what skills do you need to improve to make you a better composer?)
Skill 1:
Extend my skills with the accompaniment in my music by using other instruments and being able to play the piano while singing. I would like to be able to make a melody line for my songs on the piano as I only really had chords in my pieces.
Skill 2:
Improve the recording of my songs, record the songs all together and record them using mics. Recording my pieces properly and not just using my phone. maybe use a microphone and plug it into my phone to get a better quality vocal sound. I would need to develop my recording skills for this.
Skill 3:
I would like to be able to write in different genres, change what my songs are about and maybe their style because after a while they do start to sound the same.

Strategies to make these improvements:

Improvement #1:
Strategy:
I would like to work with my composition tutor to learn the piano better so that I feel more confident about singing and playing at the same time. I would like to work with other musicians and perhaps take guitar lessons so that I could learn to write for different instruments.

Improvement #2: Improve recording quality
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
By recording all my songs altogether instead of doing them all separate firstly. Secondly, I would like to help the technician at my school with recording other students so that I can learn how to use microphones and music programmes to record and edit the music to make it sound clearer and more polished.

Improvement #3: Write in different genres and styles
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
In the future i would maybe collaborate with someone just to get other ideas and improve me being an artist overall. I would work with other people who have a certain style e.g. r n b and then I would learn more about that style.

Feedback from others:

Tino= I really enjoyed Sam's pieces, I really loved the way that her voice blended with the piano it doesn't sound disjointed which can be common when there is only one instrument, however Sam made it all work really well. Also I thought she was in pitch all the time even during the difficult parts. I do think that should could include a wider range of instruments just to give a wider range of skills and sounds. She could also try and incorporate a wide range of genres just so that her music can appeal to everyone.

Teacher feedback - lovely emotion within these songs, well structured and the chord progressions selected fit well. Consider using other instruments for your backing instrumental and experimenting with pieces without vocals. How could you have developed the backing more, perhaps by using other instruments?

How this feedback helped with my evaluation:
Overall I could've used a guitar to improve the sound and make it more dramatic and varied. I hadn't really considered changing the type of genres before or how important it would be to have variety in style in my composition set list and would like to experiment more in the future.

Conclusion:
Overall my songs go with the brief because they are relatable and understandable. They are mellow and calming, most parents like to listen to piano based pieces and I have made melodies that fit with chords and piano accompaniment. I really like my lyrics and think that my music shows the emotion of the songs.

In the future I would like to extend my skills and learn to compose across more genres and on more instruments.
